Vibe coding and web development: what AI can do and where technical judgement still matters

Artificial intelligence has changed the way we approach digital development in a remarkably short time. Where technical judgement is still essential

This is where thoughtful analysis and well-planned development continue to matter. A website or application should not be judged only by how quickly it can be generated, but by how well it solves what it is supposed to solve.

Technical judgement remains essential in areas such as:

  • defining the right architecture for the project,
  • choosing technologies that fit the real scope and future evolution,
  • organising information and user flows correctly,
  • ensuring performance, accessibility and compatibility,
  • reviewing security and code quality,
  • integrating external services, automations or complex business logic,
  • maintaining visual and technical consistency across the project,
  • and ensuring the final solution is maintainable, scalable and genuinely useful.

In other words: AI can help build faster, but it does not replace the judgement needed to decide what to build, how to build it well and how to prevent an apparently agile project from turning into something difficult to sustain.

When it makes sense and when it does not

Not every project needs the same level of depth. There are cases where leaning heavily on AI can be perfectly reasonable: an initial validation, a demo, a simple internal tool, a functional prototype or an exploratory first phase. In that context, vibe coding can be a very useful accelerator.

But when a website or application represents an important part of the business, other factors come into play. Moving quickly is no longer enough. The project needs a better thought-out foundation, more rigorous execution and a broader view of what it must become.

AI can still contribute a great deal in these cases, but as support within a properly directed technical process, not as a replacement for that process.

AI yes, but as a tool rather than a strategy in itself

Perhaps this is the most important point. Artificial intelligence should not be used as an empty selling point or as a shortcut around the part of a project that creates real value. Its most useful role is not to impress with rapid generation, but to improve the way we work and help us build better.

When integrated with sound judgement, AI can accelerate tasks, make iterations easier and expand what is possible. But a clear vision is still required to turn an idea into a solution that is coherent with the business, the brand and the real objectives.
